Thread: No existing operating system

i have 3 year old acer aspire model 5735z laptop. hard drive has been removed. not have system restore disks , not available sale acer.
contemplating installing new hard drive , installing ubuntu operating system. (buying new windows 7 plus hard drive doesn't make $ense.)

i'm not geek. i'd appreciate input or advice before invest in cost of new hard drive.

glad hear you're considering ubuntu, or linux in general @ least! i'd agree you; microsoft building windows 8, not time purchase windows 7 licence unless needed windows something?

worth remembering somewhere on latptop should have ms product key, if new same version of key within rights use disk install key - after paid windows laptop

down business! i'd 3 years old length of time linux on laptops, speaking they're old enough have high rate of supported hardware, , not old you'll run problems... nice!

mind giving little more info - model, ram, known graphics card?

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings.
