Thread: Ubuntu 11 and the network breaking shutdown

hi chaps

have problem number of lenovo e30 machines running ubuntu 11 appear crash network when shut down.

have same machines running windows without problem have installed ubuntu on 8 of them , far 3 of them have caused switch attached to crash during shutdown of os , several others suspected of causing other crashes. removing machine switch brings switch again.

when happens machines appear lock mid shutdown , keyboard lights don't respond. powering off machine or rebooting works switch up.

switches draytek 24 port managed gigabit switches. we've replaced 2 of switches 3 times piece , confident switches aren't @ fault.

has else seen this?

specifics follows;

lenovo e30 (machine type 782436g)
- intel 82579lm onboard nic
- ubuntu 11.10

switch vigorswitch g2240
- firmware v1.42

hello

i've seen posts on smaller scale home routers, first big one

when crashed, mean whole thing inaccessible?
can console in?

have seen solutions propose many things in past,
reducing mtu size on connected machines (maybe match mtu used on windows system) , disabling ipv6,
upgrading firmware on unit (yours @ latest) , others of upgrading memory , on, irrelevant you.
ntp cuasing problems wioth smc routers, on bootup rather shutdown

above being said, have never seen related post indicating solved (with exception of smc , ntp) no harm suggesting think.

on vendor side, work telco companies , kind of problem had 2 sides, equipment manufacturers

1- device/card/action or event caused our device or card lockup or hiccup, concern , inform customers , beat on other vendor.
2- more concerning our device not prevent shutting down. p1 issue us. yes, not our fault, should able prevent ourselves going belly , bringing down whole network. concern being, competitors device may affected client not have same dire consequences.

point, im saying vendor should have skin in game though not fault , try , figure out issue also. im not sure if have support contract , maybe accessing forums may help.
if dont want help, thats understandable, short sighted. again, not problem, stopping device shutting down should of interest them

try replicate in lab, away production environment, have hub laptop , run wireshark capture , taking note of leaving box on ip or mac level.
once have thing replicated , know whats being sent out , (hopefully list small) can start prevent packets being sent, getting down 1 or ones causing trouble.

may bit of effort, can think of:-0
