How does one record tracks using a microphone and/or line-in input?

the little i've used audition (trial) find superior garage band.  however, can't seem figure out how record microphone in audition.  (ican, easily, garage band).  how 1 record tracks using extrenal microphone (pluged mac via 1/4 " inch jack) or line-in input recording/playback device?

firstly make sure can see audio device in audio hardware setup page, , make sure relevant inputs visible. in multitrack set new session, arm track , hit record.

 

and on forum, it's much easier answer specific questions general ones...

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings.
