hi,

it's pity you've installed 10.04 instead of more up-to-date ubuntu little easier.
if device works "plug 'n' play" on windows xp, uses standard drivers , work on ubuntu. windows pretends searching drivers , downloading correct one, it's slow in loading standard driver comes with!
in order switch input , output headset on ubuntu 10.04, need little utility called padevchooser, , need run it:
the first line installs it, second line runs it.code:sudo apt-get install padevchooser padevchooser
won't open window yet, adds icon top panel, looks audio jack.
that's as can remember; left-clicking icon opens menu, , there's menu item opens window. window allows set headset main audio device, or device particular program. powerful utility.
i'm running 11.10 @ moment has easier-to-use alternative preinstalled, unfortunately can't talk through exact steps padevchooser. enough information figure out rest of it.
best support might want consider sticking latest ubuntu, in future.
