Thread: dual monitor and freezes @ splash screen

hi , help. know little long winded, can tell did frozen splash screen doesn't respond either ctrl-alt-f1 or ctrl-alt-backspace.

have hp pavilion dv9008nr nvidia geforce go 6150 (uma) running ubuntu 11.10 64bit , use hp xb3000 expansion base connected second monitor , usb kb/mouse (kvm passed through belkin fidl102u--a dual port kvm switch audio , usb support , built in cabling). updates current of today, @ 1:00 pm central time.

after system updates, used nvidia settings setup dual monitors , rebooted. had reboot several times play twin view vs. extended desktop because having trouble getting display on both monitors--twin view solved issue exception of missing launcher on primary display.

had play booting normal ubuntu vs. ubuntu 2d desktops because having trouble non-responsive launcher buttons , washed out desktop background (ubuntu 2d solved issue)--in order reboot fix had use esc , tab keys.

after disconnecting laptop expansion base (and therefor 2nd monitor), not desktop display launcher if never left dual monitor mode , began rebooting several times trying ubuntu , ubuntu 2d desktop modes try launcher back. eventually, machine froze @ splash screen appeared.

know gurus have work-arounds galore system , running--how mine restored?!?!


ps. know--bad timing, backup server down because i'm migrating freenas ubuntu server...i never have expected cause entire lack of boot-ability; don't have backups of backups...
