Thread: FreeNAS won't work but Maybe Ubuntu Will...

hi all,

turned old pc freenas based home nas other day. reasons remain complete mystery me nas decided not function after 3 days despite nothing having being changed.

searched butt off no avail, problem software issue freenas not liking gear - why worked few days bit dust beyond me. hardware fine , still determined use home nas. figured put ubuntu or lubuntu on machine, set samba file sharing , away go - not ideal it'll work.

however, wish install os same thumb drive freenas installed on - frees internal hdd's content.

i'm bit of noob i'm going try , create persistent live usb stick job. machine hold data , share on network. won't have screen plugged in. i'll treating it's shared folders folders on windows desktop.

work or if not can suggest better idea? ears!!!

cheers.

- matt

it'll work, run through ubuntu installer , tell install flash drive. did same recently, flash drive died after running server few months. kind of pain reset up, put on hd partition. recommend same, small installation of ubuntu wont take space.
