Thread: Initramfs Errors after unsuccesfull upgrade

well believe it, had happen wife's laptop, she's bit of technophobe , took me ages convince leave dreaded windoze behind. been doing great until other day.

dont want ramble want understand picture, after update failed , was"too busy" help, rebooted , bam..... machine not boot , come initrams terminal...

can tell lost, wintel engineer, novell 5 cne, nt4 mcse etc have never come across teminal...well google problem , wow loads of bad news, hardware has failed, need , bad.
told wife bad news , can guess "i never had problem windoze" appart weekly blue screens , 200,000 virus infections swell microsoft puppy software.

anyway point may else out, found thread on "another" ubuntu site, if there one, , while pointed solution did not explain.....

error of machine on reboot was

mount: mounting /dev/disk/by-uuid/***************************** on /root
failed: invalid argument
mount: mounting /sys on /root/sys failed: no such file or directory
mount: mounting /dev on /root/dev failed: no such file or directory
mount: mounting /sys on /root/sys failed: no such file or directory
mount: mounting /proc on /root/proc failed: no such file or directory
target file system doesn't have /sbin/init
no init found. try passing init= bootarg

busybox v1.13.3 (ubuntu 1:1.13.3-1ubuntu7) built-in shell (ash)
enter 'help' list of built-in commands
(initramfs) _

basicly means initramfs initial ram disk file system used boot ubuntu damaged or more precise not should be. (now not panic, file system , files still there) "pre boot" system of ubuntu not know start from, caused unsuccessful update of initramfs..and related.

now there supposed solution of

1. boot ubuntu live cd;

2. open/run terminal;

3. type:
sudo fdisk -l (to device name) press enter;

disk /dev/sda: 250.1 gb, 250059350016 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 30401 cylinders
units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
disk identifier: **********

device boot start end blocks id system
/dev/sda1 * 1 30238 242886703+ 83 linux
/dev/sda2 30239 30401 1309297+ 5 extended
/dev/sda5 30239 30401 1309266 82 linux swap / solaris

device name friend's system based on above:
/dev/sda1

4. type:
sudo fsck /dev/sda1 press enter;

5. restart system , boot normally.

the above did not work me did....

.i hope helps others out there..
need machine installed same version , update of ubuntu, had laptop, not same (that cause problems later on explain, if donor machine has different hardware ie wifi card, have follow full solution below) need

  • copy of initrd.img-2.6.32-34-generic archives (all of them) usb stick" working machine or install, numbed relevant kernels".

  • then on machine problems need boot usb live install...again usb stick, issue me machine refused boot install several times, patient,
  • when install running, alt & f2 open "gksudo nautilus" type in run application, or equivalent, sorry command line warriors, know quicker way still learning.
  • navigate boot directory, , create "back up" directory, cut , paste "initrd.img-2.6.32-34-generic" archives boot directory "back up" directory.
  • from other usb stick copy working machines or installs, "initrd.img-2.6.32-34-generic archives" boot directory.... allow machine boot if have copied initrd.img-2.6.32-34-generic archives suitable machine fix done , dusted....

-----------------------------------------------------------------

in case not support wife's wifi card, had

  • plug machine broadband router network cable,

  • make sure access internet,(as needed run update)

  • go alt & f2 gksudo nautilus , boot directory again.

  • create directory "back up2"

  • cut , paste initrd.img-2.6.32-34-generic archives up2 directory
  • copy original initrd.img-2.6.32-34-generic archives "back up" dir "boot" directory.....
  • exit nautilus file browser
  • open terminal screen , run "sudo update-initramfs -u" update initramfs time out error , allow machine use of existing drivers , initramfs images....

this worked me...but if there super ubuntu's out there add comment or put me straight please feel free......

netorca...
