Thread: RAID5 arrays moved to new pc

hi all. noob disclaimer: first time i've made use of ubuntuforums.org, apologies if i've posted question wrong board - couldn't find raidy boards, i've gone "general". secondly, *have* done search similar threads past, flooded irrelevant posts , couldn't find similar situation. please feel free (politely) point me towards relevant threads, have feeling might suck @ using search function , using right keywords.

ok, apologies being noob out of way... in past had old pc i'd set ubuntu 10.04 (or close version number). on system, created 2 raid5 arrays. 1 3x250gb (500gb array), other 6x1tb (5tb array). built both arrays using pre-installed gui app called "disk utility" (and see in 11.10, it's still called that). worked quite well, , copied entire library across these arrays. after 6 months power supply died. , while pc has been sitting in corner collecting dust.

decided resurrect raid arrays. bought new motherboard & cpu, power supply, , connected hard disks. i've booted ubuntu 11.10 live cd, , thought ubuntu automatically detect , reconstruct raid arrays. well, no such luck. ubuntu 11.10 detects individual hard drives, , detects they're members of raid array, doesn't seem detect more - don't know if recognises they're raid 5, , seems think 9 drives form single raid array. , when @ raid array "state", says "not running, not enough components start".

if can me out here, appreciate it, because i'm lost. i'm not familiar raid terminal commands (mdadm?) i'm not afraid of bash prompt. i'd able save data on arrays if possible.

did have separate boot drive? can not remember if linux can boot off raid 5 array. know can boot off mirror or raid 1 software raid partition.
