i wouldn't. things can out of date, incorrect, or malicious.



instead (answering title), update system, install "ubuntu-restricted-extras" package, , surf software centre else might want. ubuntu enough don't need repos. if ever end using experimental software, might enable ppas, if far, i'll assume know you're doing file. rule of thumb: if you're not installing software or updating, root access ("sudo") bad.

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings.
