Thread: PC reboot during installing 11.x --> Ubuntu startup problems

all,
new ubuntu user, decided allow ubuntu upgrade 10.?? 11.0
went well, during installation of 1 hour, pc went "sleep" modus, , impossible out of modus in ubuntu.

had reboot pc, during start-up of ubuntu process stops somewhere @ point "checking battery status [ok]". stops. tried linux ubuntu versions , save modii, thing still working old windows xp, thank god!

can ubuntu starting again?
not start all-over installing ubuntu: loose docs , pics i've saved in ubuntu partition... help!

lessons next time: disable power saving mode before upgrading! data before installing!

unfortunately, recovering failed installation problematic. may possible i'm not sure how.

here have, , hope works you:

  1. when boot, given option between ubuntu , windows. second option "recovery mode".
  2. choose "recovery mode"; "drop root shell prompt".
  3. type following commands in order. (you may need add sudo front of each command.)
    code:
    apt-get --fix-broken install dpkg --configure --pending apt-get ist-upgrade
  4. if step 3 works, should able reboot , run update manager again.

if, however, not work, can try different approach...

if burn live cd (or preferably usb), can boot access ubuntu home folder. caveat: if encrypted home folder, following not work without sweat , tears.

  • when boot live cd, find /home/[username] folder in nautilus.
  • check can see files in folder.
  • press ctrl-h can see hidden files , folders (those beginning dot).
  • now need in folder. copy entire home folder safe place -- windows data area idea if there space.
  • boot windows , check files there.

now, can reinstall ubuntu scratch. once have recreated user , signed in, first run updates. then, copy entire folder again windows -- restore settings! need reinstall programs want installed.

relatively painless procedure. recommend fresh installation on upgrade, because i've seen many problems upgrades.

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings.
