hi folks,

want write program read slack space in disk drive. operating system running on version of ubuntu, redhat, , possibly arch.

wrote program while back, incremented array pointer out of bounds, , read main memory in windows7 quite happily. result of sensible security measures did not work in linux, mean reallocate memory (etc, etc) create expanding memory space eat working memory of machine.

besides... want read hard disk, not main memory. nice iteratively go through slack space, not reserving memory space. want output chars. now, output can go stdout, or file, memory space issue running on same machine, on same disk (so can't output , save data, although kind of filtering mechanism used, save interesting data). guess maybe reading stdout , pipe/grepping output redirect solution, eg:

so, motivation behind check out old data logs, reside, un-deleted in slack space on root partition (a-la-kaspersy style, if saw recent kaspersky duqu report).

programming-wise i'm planning use c, although open suggestion, , have proficiency in c++, python, tcl, ruby (and jvm stuff wont applicable).

suggestions / welcome. , replies. main problem don't know how access hd without using file pointer or how iteratively without locking space.
