Thread: Triple Boot MacbookPro (Lion, Win7, Ubuntu)

alright, begin knowing many such posts out such this. however, worked me, , thought share. experience trial , error , solution came researching other fixes. guide assuming know way around mac well. although if have posted in wrong place, apologize. digress...

hardware: macbookpro8,2

problems

• lion recovery partition getting in way
• windows not booting after installing ubuntu…. "missing operating system"
• refit not installing properly

solution:

download , install got fdisk mac... http://sourceforge.net/projects/gptfdisk/
download refit... http://refit.sourceforge.net/

make backup: once gdisk installed go terminal , type 'sudo disk /dev/disk0'. take disk menu. once there enter 'b', , type file name (it automatically save in home folder). once finish quit entering 'q'

installing refit... many people have difficulty installing refit. trick install manually (check out refit's documentation). reboot , should see new loader.

partition disk... need create 2 new partitions windows , linux (disk utility works fine). format both of them fat.

install windows 7.... in installer format disk want windows on ntfs , finish through installation (note:your computer reboot several times , each time make sure boot new windows partition under refit). once finished go ahead , install boot camp drivers. eject key won't work yet you'll have eject setup disk control panel.

install ubuntu... going need both live usb , live cd. create live usb: http://www.nightlion.net/guides/2011...line-diskutil/ , live cd burn .iso disk utility. both cd , usb inserted in computer, reboot , hold down 'c' key on restart. may take several minutes should installer. in installer select advanced installation option. format , use partition set aside linux. set mount point '/' , *install grub boot loader whatever partition installing linux on. give warning not having swap partition, can ignore , create swap file inside ubuntu later. install , reboot lion

@ moment have screwed hybrid mbr table (this because lion recovery disk uses 1 of precious mbr slots)
in order fix going create new hybrid mbr table. have attached screenshots of process.
reopen terminal , again type 'sudo gdisk /dev/disk0'. time enter 'r'. , 'p'. print partitions. need create hmbr type 'h'. ask partitions wish enter. referring printed partition list, add lion, windows , linux partitions. (in case 2 4 5). next ask place efi partition first, select 'y'. ask mbr hex code each partition. codes want 'af' lion, '07' windows, , '83' linux. don't set of bootable flags. once finish enter 'w' write these changes disks. can enter 'q' if want quit without saving changes. reboot , should able boot each of oses.



tip: if reason doesn't work , want restore gpt table, go gdisk, enter 'r', enter 'l', , type backup filename. reboot , you'll no longer have win or linux partitions gpt gpt table normal.

edit: if want 'common' partition, create 3 new partition @ beginning(one win7, 1 ubuntu, 1 common).
if decide want shared partition after install win7 , ubuntu, create new partition , recreate hybrid mbr described above.

i think should add keywords: how-to, macbook pro 2011, ubuntu, multi boot, etc. thread. , update title of thread reflect how-to , not thread asking support themulti-boot problems on macbook pro. people find post better on both google , forums search.

i'm having problem booting ubuntu (,arch linux, opensuse , fedora ) cd(s) on macbook pro 8.1. though, haven't tried suggestions yet, try them out when free time , post outcome. thanks, instructions though..
