Thread: Ubuntu boot problem
ok first of ubuntu 11.10 awesome!!!
here did (oops)
pc came wxp pro
last year updated w7 64bit (works well...adressed few driver issues, good!
year found unbuntu 11.10 (as mentioned above...awesome!)
installed 11.10 wubi inside windows os (w7 home)
had 10gb free space in hd worked fine
followed through few forum searches , got drivers working.
played 11.10 day or (awesome!)
took little further , stated downloading apps. little while. rebooted , got purple screen (ubuntu default) nothing else? (boot problem?)
windows right
can assume there problem based on apps/packages installed?? had several packages installing @ same time (probably bad idea)
in interest of learning went wrong??
how can check why doesn't boot ubuntu more?
can find, open, view ub files (.cfg, etc.)
don't know looking for?
other question is: can save driver updates previous ub install?
"best" way full install of ub 11.10
mean...clear hd space, partition drive, continue running in w7os, etc.
still have personal docs (stuff want keep) in windows (but want move them on later)
know long winded perhaps suggest best way fix or reinstall ub permanent , best performance?
thx in advance

the best approach long-term ubuntu use install using linux filesystem in own partitions. not free dependency on windows loader working (to os selection screen), your're not in virtual file system -- allows run little faster.
downside have mess around partitioning, being careful not use ubuntu installer, or gparted, shrink win7 os partition. overwrites mbr, making restoring task dealt later.\
but, important, risks overwriting win7 install -- if wrong partition selected during ubuntu install formatting.
if you're interested in doing dual-boot, let know -- , i'll post another, longer, post details.
