On one of my computers when I import files the are coming in as TIFF+JPG:

i want tiffs , jpgs seperate thumbs not combined. happening on 1 of macs other mac not combine them thumbnail above.

are talking tif , jpeg, or talking raw , jpeg? if talking raw , jpeg there option in preferences treat jpeg images next raw separate images. if option not checked jpeg image display.

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings.
