hello,

first: ubuntu 8.04 old, lts version, advise install newer version of ubuntu: either newer lts version, ubuntu 10.04, or newest ubuntu version, ubuntu 11.10 (year 2011, month october). lts versions supported 3 years, intermediate versions 18 months. support ubuntu 8.04 has stopped anyway.

mention recovery disk, presume livecd, of ubuntu 8.04, , "re-imaged" system. don't know mean that. usual thing use livecd (or alternate cd) install system , cleanly on computer, if want next operating system (windows, linux), or using hard disk itself. latter simple thing , best beginners, install ubuntu themselves. if know partitions, better own way: partition /, partition /home, , swap partition.

depends on size of hard disk:
/ minimum 5gb, better 10 or more gb
/swap twice ram (working memory, internal memory)
/home rest of hard disk. more better, wil hold personal files , configurations of users of computer. when let ubuntu install itself, not create separate /home, sorry @ next install.

huge number of updates expect such old system, quite "normal".

rest of question can't of. depends on size of hard disk, , of sizes of partitions. thing updates have been downloaded , been saved somewhere on disk, can remove them terminal command:

sudo apt-get clean

must enter password, password entered when installing.

succes,

topsiho
