Thread: Installing Ubuntu 11.10 on the Samsung NP305V5A-A04US laptop

this samsung series 3 computer new (released within past few months) mid-range model comes with windows7 installed. many of chipsets apparently relatively new, ati radeon 6620g graphics , atheros ar9485 wireless network controller. tried install ubuntu 11.10, tried several other distros, , able solve video , wlan issues ubuntu. here's ran into:

problem: during bootup of livecd, screen display graphics short period, prompt in upper left corner, go dead. not blank, dead.

solution: first graphical screen appeared, hit f6. brought boot menu. selecting f6 again allowed me add parameters bootup, , selected nomodeset. hitting escape allowed me select how wanted boot (run livecd, install, etc.) , selected install.

once installed, booted ubuntu , experienced same issue. rebooting , selecting recovery mode in grub allowed me boot command line. there, tried start gui via startx, encountered fatal error , exited command line. typing "nano /var/log/xorg.0.log" called error log file , showed me problem: fglrx module missing. sudo apt-get install fglrx solved issue , able go gui startx. after rebooting, gdm appeared--problem solved. have accelerated 3d graphics, equal to, or better in win7 on same computer.

problem: linux not recognizing either wireless or wired network controller.

solution: research on google indicated problem lay earlier kernels, kernel 2.6.39 , later had no problems wireless controller. i've not yet attempted connect via realtek rtl8111/8168b wired network controller, can't answer whether or not has similar issues. solution lay in selecting distro later kernel. hoped, ubuntu found wireless controller , allowed me connect internet via wireless router during installation.


so, have ubuntu 11.10 on new samsung. not first experience ubuntu. i've been using steadily since v7.x, , it's installed on other 3 computers in house--as sole os on one. however, initial attempt install it, having screen go dead, caused me elsewhere. foolish of me, turns out, ubuntu's 1 distro find or figure out answers problems.

just bought this: samsung series 3 np300v4a-a03us 14-inch laptop amazon
i5 intel integrated graphics card, recommend installing ubuntu, wanted go 10.04, seems post need newer kernals?
