Thread: unity / dual monitor weirdness

after trial , error, seem have managed configure external monitor work hp laptop running ubuntu 11.10. (the laptop has ati graphics.) did running amdcccle command line , configuring 2 monitors. getting them both work @ correct resolutions, , getting desktop extend across them lot of effort. since don't know i'm doing.

seemed good. , once activated xinerama (which don't know is), able drag applications 1 screen other. is, me, kind of point. don't want fancy, more screen real estate. can have, instance, couple of office documents , firefox window open , large enough can see them.

things started going wrong. unity desktop seems behave strangely, when start maximizing windows. example, launcher moves 1 display other. once or twice disappeared , had restart back. application menus disappear in unpredictable ways.

if avoid maximizing windows, things seem work okay.

, point of weirdness: if left-click on little gear-looking thing in panel @ top of screen (which give me dropdown menu options turn off, hibernate, etc.), menu appears long hold down mouse button. before click make stay around click on 1 of options.

think i'm caught between ati screen configuration software, x, xinerama, unity, , compiz. (note understanding of each of terms incomplete.)

apologize unclear terminology: i'm still new @ this.

guidance? general pointers?

the last problem reported in teacherjeff's post problem i'm experiencing. first configured screens in relative space using amdcccle display manager. , utilize third monitor, turned on xinerama. after reboot, clicking menu items display long hold mouse button down.

wondering if else has experienced this?

running 12.04lts 64 bit, i5 750 chip, 2x ati 5770's
