can tell me how force ubuntu use installed nvidia geforce pci card?
first let me there no words in human language describe hatred card!!!

said, don't have choice @ time because can't afford purchase new video card.
2 days before christmas (2011) 7 year old computer died. so, i'm stuck old ibm computer.
here's have work with:

  • ibm pentium 4 1.80 ghz.
  • 1.5 gig.'s ram
  • integrated brookdale-g graphic chip (disabled in bios)
  • nvidia geforce4 mx 440 nv17 pci card (this card trying installed)
  • sound blaster live sound card

i've installed drivers video card using ubuntu's "additional drivers" applet , recommended using nvidia accelerated graphics driver (version 96) did.
when open system info. app. shows "unknown" next graphics.

have been working on problem far long , want resolved. can't believe difficult appropriate drivers installed card has been around 10 years; linux. if m$ windows computer, understand it.

if has suggestions extremely grateful.

that known/common bug in system info app. check glxinfo verify correct driver installation:

sudo apt-get install mesa-utils glxinfo

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings.
