Thread: which is the best linux distro for my machine?

hello all!
i've been windows user till now, , last year installed ubuntu 10.04 cos said ubuntu best linux beginners. want learn linux programming , stuff, cos have linux in coursework semester, , i'm complete newbie. config :
p4 2.4 ghz,
maxtor 200 gb hdd,
intel d865gvhz motherboard,
768 mb ram,
on-board graphics.
ran ubuntu 11.10 yesterday, , though seems running fine (no lags etc), heard might strain on machine. best distro config, considering i'm complete newbie , i'm considering use full time (i have windows in lappy, want put in linux in desktop. in advance!

system stressed under load, ubuntu recommend 1 gb of ram +.
after searching around, think linux mint best you, according 1 of forums should run ok, more ram better. many of heavier everyday distros require 1 gig of ram +.

if feel mint straining machine try dsl linux or feather linux. run treat, however, i'm not sure how practical requirements.

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings. how do I change the e-mail address for my merchant account
