Thread: Misreported amount of RAM

i upgraded ram, going 2gb 4gb. post , bios report 4gb. once booting 10.04, however, system shows total of 3,024mb of memory shown here:

code:
michael@michael-desktop:~$ free -m -t total used free shared buffers cached mem: 3024 2866 158 0 140 779 -/+ buffers/cache: 1946 1078 swap: 5890 0 5890 total: 8915 2866 6049
before did upgrade system showed proper amount. in addition, had 2gb swap partition, did not change. now, partition has grown 5890mb. can tell me going on , how fix it?

sounds bios isn't reporting correctly. may bios problem. anyway before moderator comes , explains should banned(or maybe not), i'm going tell don't know. restart pc, load bios, before os loads, f8 or f2 it. thoroughly, perform memory test. possible got bad ram. did buy ddr2 pc5300 ram? standard, model of computer have? os linux ubuntu oneiric ocelot of previous natty narwhal? if give computer model, find mobo, , list compatible ram work controllers read random access memory.

if computer boots up, hard drive , processor , psu go. let's not confuse it.
