After Effects CS6 locks up on render

this started out installing old sound card (creative labs audigy ls) made xp. installed hardware, found third party drivers vista 64, , problems began. while working on project in ae cs6, discovered queued renders crash after first one, "dynamiclinkmediaserver.exe has stopped working" error. i've noticed in task manager quicktime doesn't seem running - if start adobe media encoder, it's there, i'm thinking maybe got stepped on. if run adobe media encoder, quicktime module shows up, , might able render off 1 file ae, crash - crash isn't right word - screen goes black, , fans on machine start running hard. have hard reboot, , i'm square one. there way fix software without total reinstall - i've got lot of plugins, , real pain reinstall of them - there maybe "repair" feature on cs6 discs can use? thanks.

i've said before , i'll again. there's no way anythning guess without specifics project, render settings , system. kind of started telling setup there many variables have guess @ causing problems. need details. lots of them.

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings.
