Thread: Dual boot failure ASUS EeePC with WinXP-UBUNTU
my son in law has (oct.-2011) bought asus eeepc 1201nl, preloaded win xp. no recovery or utilities cd/dvd, (although manual says cd/dvd comes machine), supplied netbook.
has been using ubuntu, , wanted ubuntu 10.04 on new machine. told vendor accept ubuntu.
he came me assistance.
although have installed @ least 4 dual booting systems (win-xp & ubuntu) on variuos discarded machines.
on occasion tried install side side existing windows xp, when process finished not access machine either win xp nor ubuntu.
have tried sorts of things end getting following on screen:
“ error: no such device: e3d001dd-b57e-4b27-ac3a-6e6cbf02a17c.
grub rescue>”
after lot of fiddling managed access machine follows:
inserting usb ubuntu 11-04 live. on boot , pressing escape key (sometimes after pressing f2 key), give me dual boot choice, , access netbook hdd , consequently access either win xp or ubuntu.
if not follow above procedure above error message.
guess problem solved using grub , removing necessity of having boot machine usb 11.04 inserted, not know how , step step solution appreciated !
can ?
thank
hello
have same netbook dual booting xp
not grub guru sounds problem uuid's assigned different partitions.
if can start 10.04 on disk using usb, run command in terminal
sudo fdisk -l
list partitions.
run
blkid
list uuids assigned them.
open /boot/grub/grub.cfg , see if grub line 10.04 has right uuids
if not, have found problem.
easiest fix search ubuntuforums 'grub2 tutorial'. there a guru has written how fix uuid problems , in signature link utility called 'boot repair' automatically fixs grub2 problems.
hope gets started luck.
