Thread: How many people use Ubuntu with Gnome-shell in stead of Unity?

i have ubuntu 11.10 both unity , gnome-shell can try them both out , see 1 prefer.

far liking gnome-shell more unity, not much.

  • i no-limit on desktops instead of 4-square approach.
  • i how can see status of contacts typing name in ... dashboard(?).
  • i information monitor on bottom of screen, , resizing of icons in side panel.
  • i used gnome-tweak add minimize/maximize button on windows.
  • i prefer calendar view when clicking on panel's clock.


running gnome-shell instead of unity on ubuntu (or other distributions)? thoughts on it, , thoughts on gnome-shell compared unity?

not meant unity bash-fest, more interested in comparisons people have used 1 or both , willing provide constructive criticism.

have spend more time in unity , more experienced give better reference compare against in time.

i have switched on using gnome-shell past couple of weeks. not unity hater, though. appreciate gnome-shell open software, whereas unity not. more wide open feel of gnome-shell desktop.

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings.
