Please help! May have lost over 3500 pics!

ok, trying not panic.  have photoshop elements 10, save pictures of family etc.   well, wanted move pictures external hard drive because taking memory on laptop (and save them in case happened laptop). guess wasn't paying attention , when moved them, moved them xml files.  needless say, when went external open them, not able to.  also, when tried open them in photoshop edit them, said photo not found , had reconnect?  guess means put them on laptop?  don't know.  guess copied them , didn't move them, that's why image in photoshop program, cannot "open" image edit it?  so, can change file format on external hard drive can open them?  i'm not sure do.  suggestions appreciated.

this not make sense.  xml file not picture file.  xmp file not picture file, edits raw file.

 

so not sure talking about.  in addtion photoshop forum not photoshop elements forum, question answer same.

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings.
