lets jump right this:


the set up
plan on building new pc @ beginning of year. have never been linux user before now, , want utilize system full advantage. realize there incompatibilities when comes using hardware windows based computer systems , switching linux. know can run-- estimate better right equipment.

therefore, since have painfully shy approach fellow humans in real world, of give kind advice on of favorite pieces of computer hardware if putting machine linux?


building pc
thread wanted search question. please include versions of linux favorite , use per; video card, motherboard, ram, hard drives...etc. of these personal electronic tastes not every piece of computer participate in functionality of linux operating system.

use personal computer internet browsing, downloading videos/music/programs, recording videos, little gaming, ram , hard drive higher , should taken consideration rest of pc building. (not gaming hardcore video card stuff not necessary this).


linux distros include , consideration- ubuntu, kubuntu, xbuntu, fedora, centos, debian, , more.

have used 2 versions of ubuntu , have had issues both on netbook. when build computer run better ever, , try out several others have heard little about, never gotten close installing.


price
budget around mid thousand dollar mark. $650 desired limit. of course , running , additional money can added time progresses.

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings. how do I change the e-mail address for my merchant account
