Thread: How to boot to command line interface?

is there way boot ubuntu-11.10 command line interface can bypass graphics regain control of pc , apt-get updating? have been hit “cannot display video mode” again , time, no matter do, cannot past hurdle.

installed ubuntu-11.10 little on month ago , had problems connecting old dell 1280x1024 60 hz lcd screen: “cannot display video mode” when ubuntu tries take final control of screen after boot-up. advice fantab (posting #4), able resolve issue creating script set screen known-good resolution/frequency , placing link script in /etc/x11/xsession.d/ script executed on startup.

regrettably, fix no longer works. access pc ubuntu-11.10 cd.

several things changed after last update on 30-dec-11:

  • the link fix resolution script remove /etc/x11/xsession.d/, because folder overwritten. however, restoring link did not remedy situation.
  • “crt1” no longer recognized xranadr. has changed “vga-0”. however, fixing resolution restoring script address did not remedy situation.

other efforts failed:

  • changing resolution restoring script set lower resolution 1280x1024 60 1024x768 60 used ubuntu-11.10 cd.
  • uncommenting “# grub_gfxmode=640x480” , changing “grub_gfxmode=1280x1024x16,800x600x24,640x480”.

..and, uncommenting “#grub_terminal=console” still resulted in black “cannot display video mode”.

in short, pc unusable until can screen work again. worse yet, unable install updates may have resolved "cannot display.." issue.
