Thread: new installation - CD works, 'installed' doesnt

hello all, i'm new forums, new ubuntu/linux. built current machine several years ago, put windows vista on (horrible decision) used year , after got married (1.5 years ago) left in box in closet. decided bring out, ditch vista , give ubuntu spin. i'm running problems - i've checked forums pretty extensively, tried bunch of different solutions , every time feel i'm on edge of working correctly, doesnt. here's details on machine , i've tried far:

machine details:
motherboard: asus crosshair
cpu: amd athlon 64 x2 dual-core 6000+ 3.0ghz
video: pny nvidia geforce 6600
hd: wd caviar 320gb 7200rpm sata
ram: 4x1gb ddr2-800
monitor: 19" acer al1916w

downloaded ubuntu desktop 11.10 (32-bit) , burned cd. able launch live cd using "nomodeset" option, ran hangups during installation (freezing). tried of other options , able installation complete live cd using "acpi=off". split hd 2 partitions: 200gb still has vista on it, , 120gb ubuntu. after reset, i'd ubuntu splash screen , go black. tried going through various kernel boot options (nomodeset, acpi=off, noapic, etc) appending kernel boot line in grub... same thing - little bit of loading, black screen.

looked around forums , seem think it's video card issue. i've been through sticky "graphics resolution- upgrade /blank screen after reboot" in "installation & upgrades" forum (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1743535) trying every troubleshooting line in first 2-3 pages of thread.

trying boot text console (appending "text" kernel boot line in grub) doesn't work - same black screen. somewhere read remove "quiet splash vt.handoff=7" kernel boot line , replace "--verbose single" , instead of black screen, gives me command line. there, can switch text terminals using <ctrl><alt><f1-6> blank (except first has command line). there, i've tried installing nvidia-current apt-get ... , runs... says it's done something, gui still won't start when run "sudo service gdm start" ... "service not exist" type message.

other command line can come when boot in "recovery mode" , "drop root shell prompt"... i'm not quite sure there far looking , installing drivers doesn't seem able connect repositories

@ point, thought maybe having issues 32-bit version, downloaded , burned cd 64-bit version. launched live cd (again w/"nomodeset"), erased , reinstalled, installation completed w/no problems... reset... , black screen again @ same spot, same symptoms around.

i'm confused can launch cd simple modification, can't go way installation.

don't think i've left out i've tried... been working on 3 days now, may have forgotten something. appreciated... way off base , maybe it's not video card problem... brain fried though , box might go closet

in advance.

did install nvidia proprietary drivers?
