Why does Distiller double my file size?

i using acrobat distiller create secured pdf (indesign export pdf --> save *.ps --> process through acrobat distiller --> secured pdf), doubling file size despite fact settings same export settings.  (i have use distiller add security because adding security directly pdf file changes version 5.x 7.x , need remain 5.x server/license settings.)

have tried adding security pdf , using reduce file size or pdf optimize save 5.x version? save or save sets current version, other 2 methods (under save aa x , aa xi) allows save previous version.

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings.
