spacing inbetween paths?

hi everyone, know question may vague, how did artist come this? "a" 1 piece? , started cutting things out? how achieved? new im fascinated how spacing between compliments overall flow of design. if please link me tutorial of similiar this, can use seperate different lines, appreciate it.

could anything. yes, cutting existing outlined letter boxes , pathfinder operations , applying round corners effect 1 way, if don't know pathfinders, guess should start bueying head in online couple of hours... it's not technique particularly exotic, it's realyl lack severely in basics can't see through such simple design...

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings.
