Thread: Dual-boot mac os 10.4.11 and ubuntu 11.10 on macbook 2.1

hi,
first time dual booting using linux on mac.

downloaded refit , followed directions ubuntu mactel page. installed ubuntu 11.10. hangs indefinitely in refit. couldn't fix via refit's partitioning tool or through gptsync on live cd. gave up.

luckily, in frustration pressed option/alt key upon start up, , on screen presented 2 partitions: 1 refit , other windows. clicked on windows option , ubuntu boots/works fine. click on refit , refit start menu comes , choose mac os option, , boots fine too. or thirdly start without clicking on option/alt , refit window appears , click on mac os option.

question can remove refit , continue use option/alt key @ start up? or if remove refit no longer able dual boot? want able click on option/alt use ubuntu partition without hoop of refit requiring 2 steps mac os x partition.

, question: if refit has nothing why dual booting, why people encouraged use refit when can press alt/option key?

edit: stupidly, noticed sticky how install ubuntu 9.4 on mac above , it's using alt/option key.. info should on mactel ubuntu page. doesnt' answer question if i'll ruin partition scheme, if remove refit.

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings.
