Thread: Remote Desktop to Ubuntu

hi there,

new ubuntu, , far - enjoying it.
managed install ubuntu 11.10.

background is, others, windows , server environments, i've decided start using ubuntu/linux other applications need, e.g. nagios, ntop - of have installed.

have 2 questions though i'd on.

1) possible remote ubuntu box similar use remote desktop log onto windows box.

2) if there service on ubuntu want start, , using windows machine, because cannot access ubuntu box physically, how do this? (what tools use?)

hi , welcome forums,

in answer first question, servers on same network, use x11vnc server, can installed through ubuntu software centre, or apt-get. need on windows box freely available vnc viewer.

regard second - use ssh, install openssh server on ubuntu box:

sudo apt-get install openssh-server
you can remote terminal window (command prompt on ubuntu server) windows box using ssh client, such putty.

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings.
