maybe me, can't make out theme difference in screenshot. if using xubuntu 11.10, make sure using gtk3-compliant theme (greybird 1 such theme). applications not conforming theme properties?

second part, how make new windows open centrally on screen, they're opening on place , annoying.
go setting -> settings manager -> window manager tweaks -> placement tab , make sure "at center of screen" option selected. note: may have play around "maximum size of windows trigger smart placement" value windows comply.

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings.
