need ideas regarding ubuntu installation effort. have computer @ 1 time running ubuntu 10.10, 11.04 , win98se quite happily. last july decided use update manager move 10.10 installation 11.04 also. @ point things fell apart. since time nothing runs , can't reinstall anything. did manage fdisk hd using old version of partition magic. sit have 5 ubuntu cdroms 10.10, 2 of 11.04, , 2 of 11.10. 5 boot on other computers without problem. none boot on problem computer. no start up. have 2 cdrom drives computer want put ubuntu on. neither take , load ubuntu cdrom. thin have work @ old win98se disk. install last restart in process , go no further. computer boot safe mode. unable fix, if sfc right, user.exe because repair have 5mb of software takes cdrom computer won't read. memtest checks out ok seagate hd test. ideas on try next? thanks.

what kind of computer this? ubuntu or windows boots safe mode?

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings.
