Thread: start-up manager ineffective w/r/t Windows boot

new 11.10 installation on dell d630 (2gb ram) running xp. (absolutely gorgeous interface, btw, "unity." love it.)

seems fine except need default boot xp, and, though can select "xp" default boot in startup manager program, upon reboot ubuntu still selected.

execute instructions boot other oss - recovery mode, example. uninstalled , re-installed startup manager, , didn't make difference.

i'm ok command line/terminal approach issue.

in advance,
scott

i'll tell personal preference, may or may not like.
default grub2 boot system number '0' , it's starting count 0, means first system in menu. preference in /etc/default/grub.

avoid menu position of windows change if new kernels of ubuntu added on top, change number in filename of os-prober detects other oss. if in /etc/grub.d main files 10_linux ubuntu, , 30_os-prober detects other oss including linux oss. 10 means ubuntu read before others. create copy of os-prober number smaller 10, , make original non executable:

sudo cp /etc/grub.d/30_os-prober /etc/grub.d/06_os-prober
sudo chmod -x /etc/grub.d/30_os-prober

makes windows first in menu can leave default value @ 0 in /etc/default/grub.

after above command recreate new grub.cfg run:
sudo update-grub

should have different layout in boot menu , windows should default boot if don't touch anything.

ps. if rid of memtest entries in menu looks more organized, can make file non executable too:
sudo chmod -x /etc/grub.d/20_memtest86+
sudo update-grub

if ever want make executable again, run same chmod command +x.
