Thread: Ubuntu is correctly installed on an external drive, but my computer cannot access it

the title pretty says it. have hp pavilion dv6 runs windows 7 on primary hard drive , want ubuntu installed alongside it. wanted install ubuntu on partition within primary drive, neither windows nor ubuntu installer letting me that. free space listed "unusable space" , error says cannot have more 4 partitions, in use factory settings. think they're using dynamic partitions, partition size extended when needs larger.

after didn't work, went out , got seagate hard drive , installed ubuntu on there. didn't think success @ first because either got "grub rescue>>" prompt or black screen blinking cursor @ top. tried reinstall , repair grub many ways made no difference. tried seagate on dad's work labtop (which sort of hp elitebook believe), see if miraculously happen , did. booted ubuntu, asking login , everything, it's supposed to, machine still can't handle it. can this?

hp's use 4 primary partitions. , if use windows create more, converts basic dynamic not work linux , windows repair tools.

boot issue related video drivers, bios settings (laptops have few) or other boot parameters.
