Thread: Ubuntu should have its own File Manager

let me start saying love "unity". hated it, transition traditional gnome2 desktop experience entirely new one. switched gnome3, cinnamon , in fact moved gnome2. eventually, unity grew on me. somehow felt more stable in day day usage.

still hate fact painfully slow , laggy, love features inherently comes alt+tab, use of compiz window manager, switching inside same application windows (atl+~) etc.
have hated nautilus ever since have started using linux. don't me wrong, love features in hate fact when in gnome evolving leaps , bound, despite making gutsy move gnome3, after implementing entirely new approach desktop, nautilus somehow still remains same. world around keeps on evolving stubbornly refuses so. , has been story since last 5-10 years. nautilus not change.

gives birth projects nautilus elementary , marlin people end loving. why? nautilus, how ever feature is, lags behind @ 1 basic feature - browsing!. gives @ browsing directly more hundred files/directories. hangs , takes forever. handles ftp , other protocols pretty though, , developer entirely eliminates need use filezilla (that why mentioned love nautilus features). developer might use such features 5-10% of total time of using nautilus. rest 90-95% of time spent browsing directories, nautilus painful.

see windows explorer , mac's finder , somehow can't myself being envious of them. ask myself, why after creating desktop environment stands second no one, gnome still can't nautilus. don't respect windows , honest not fan of mac (gloried linux). respect them doing basic task. there no security, there literally no in-built tools carry day day task, no driver support matter. list , many more capable of being dealt with. ubuntu, linux in general provides of these fails miserably @ basic tasks. take instance, drawing desktop. auto arrange never ending debate; should there, others not required. exercise,

1. open windows/ mac on system.

2. have sets of files on ubuntu desktop on windows , mac. include files have thumbnails images, pdf etc.

3. compare neatness of windows/mac desktop opposed ubuntu one.

not saying must have features, question when @ 2012, why stuck looks , arrangements 90's? enriches user experience, proven other systems, should incorporated in our ubuntu too. don't replicate feature build better around it.

didn't raise issue here because thought doesn't belong here. gnome issue. since ubuntu has done such great job in providing alternate desktop, though built on gnome. why not have own file manager? file manager, marlin, caters need of users.

not fan of elementary project if ask me, browsing through reminded have killed methodology on linux built. again, don't me wrong, not blaming gnome it. have done brilliant job, gnome handling when comes desktop environment not linux built on. why not ubuntu come own file manager, better/faster/stable/feature-rich nautilus, , offer default in upcoming ubuntu releases. may gnome adopt default in desktop well.

solution:

ubuntu should develop own file manager built entirely on feature requests users , not developers. , yes coming developer. because can browse files in terminal developer, in ide when using nautilus largely user. file manager should built ground projects such "marlin" (i apologize mentioning other project here, believe should learn work others doing), shall cater basic requirements of browsing files , drawing pretty neat desktop.

ideas put forth are: (lets call file manager "warthog", name of first ubuntu public release)

1. warthog should work on using less resources while doing basic tasks such browsing, thumbnail caching, copy, cut, pasting.

2. should optimized work large requests. these might include: browsing large directories, pasting large sized files/directories.

3. warthog should include features nautilus helps developers. handling/storing credentials ftp , other protocols.

4. should draw neat desktop unlike nautilus.

5. warthog should support basic views such icon, list, details, compact.

6. should show selected file/directory basic information somewhere.

7. design should minimalist enough give majority space current directory.

8. notifications should handled in better way. deletion confirmation should elegantly displayed.

9. icons should neatly aligned in grid.

10. should support plugins generic tasks thumbnails generation.

11. should have support emblems.

12. warthog should handle bookmarks should replace in browse various applications. example "save as" dialog in web browser should show these bookmarks.

13. should differentiate elegantly between files/directories based on various parameters. example: hidden files when shown should faded, files cannot edit should differently marked etc.

above features basic features should "must have". there many other features should included development progresses since not need in initial release. few of these are:

1. option align icons in desktop. unity bar having on the left, icons on desktop close it. traditional way of having icon left right bit overrated. have many of friends/colleagues manually arranging icons right left. gives better flow , advice of try once, love it.

2. there should clear segregation between plug , play hard drives , in built hard drives. windows handles pretty well. again configurable , default should way been handled currently. still might want have in-build hard-drives not shown , plug , play device. somehow adds better feeling while browsing such directories. again, understand way mount works on linux, talking of giving perception , not changing way handled kernel.

3. file information should configurable, should displayed. size of information bar/footer can configurable , placement.

4. drag , drop should implemented in way supposed be! ever tried dragging , dropping file nautilus other application? never works! , if nautilus maximized, there no way can drop file background application. there no way. in mac/windows, 1 alt+tab while still dragging file , switch application 1 wants file dropped. helps lot trust me! there might many otherwise, firmly believe help.

5. have tabbed , split features nautilius. think nautilus nails these features entirely , perfection.

6. have file information bar, preview files. embedded media player audio/video files. not talking "space" (gloobus-preview) feature here, allows user preview files. think "space" feature in images , documents ridiculous! 1 might open in designated viewer, feature helps in other media files.

have written above features both basic , advanced out of understand of usage. others might have different opinion. might worship nautilus , such people find post offending. wish here lets make discussion constructive ubuntu in coming years better stands currently. know, if implemented in ubuntu, large leap distribution.

not precise topic, moved cafe.
