How to update while avoiding a trojan installation of McAfee antivirus?

i have made several attempts install latest update. installation says nothing installing mcafee antivirus (which incompatible current antivirus), , have had bad experience mcafee in past. consider cure worse ailment. don't install nagware. prefer doing without such programs, or running them in vm when absolutely must run them. avoid java same reason. won't run nagware. have lost data because of poorly timed interruptions, , won't allow programs on computer.

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings.
