The downloaded Adobe Reader XI doesn't work!

this might known, have never experienced it! downloaded adobe reader xi, , when wanted open pdf file, adobe started....... , disappeared! thought maybe had done wrong, tried once more, same result! found wanted have old version (x) back, unloaded xi , reinstalled x, ......, know what? same happened old version! there's wrong here, what? think have tried that's supposed, have come blank! can me?

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings.
