Thread: Extending battery life on laptop

hey all,

bought toshiba portege r835 , set dual boot ubuntu 11.10 , windows 7. have quite amazed @ how ubuntu runs out of box.

after having used while notice how laptop gets considerably hotter , runs louder in ubuntu in windows. browsed web , read different power saving ideas , tools (laptop-mode vs tlp, example), not being experienced user - don't know lot how kernel , modules etc work - found difficult understand reasonable things are. below list of info think relevant. of me setting laptop consumes less power? thank much!

powertop tells me:
laptop has between 700 , 1200 wakeups per second, cpus run in high c modes (mostly in 7). lot of wakeups come firefox things, hrtimer_wakeup , compiz.
under tunables tells me "vm writeback timeout" bad. that, , how change it?
similarly, told "enable sata link power management /dev/sda". mean? effect performance of drive?
similarly, should set "autosuspend usb device intel(r) centrino(r) wireless-n + wimax 6150 (intel corporation)". do?

help!
