Thread: Proper way for complete system backup

folks,

in past, have backed windows partitions using norton ghost. appreciate in understanding proper way backup linux system.

under windows, used partition disk in 2 partitions. c:\ drive windows files , d:\ drive designated data files. backup c:\ partition. in case of problem, restore c:\ partition.

things seem bit different under linux world. first, appears backup , restore within linux system opposed booting external cd , carrying backup.

first question if backup/restore within os reliable enough. won't run locked files issues? also, can happen system gets toasted cannot login system?

appears 1 has use "dd" backup partition. used using ubuntu's automatic partition method during install. in case, partitions must backup? has "complete" backup system can restored exact same state.

finally, there checkpoint backup mechanism under linux/ubuntu? perhaps use mechanism.

other advice appreciated.

thank in advance help.

regards,
peter
