Clone Stamp Selection Failure in CS6

i try using clone stamp selection fails error message:

 

could not use clone stamp because area clone has not been defined (alt-click define source point).

 

when press alt, see characteristic selection bullseye. but, afterwards, right-click of mouse reveals open circle , error message.

 

i note key works menu selections (e.g., alt-file) , other actions.

 

i have closed ps , re-opened. reset clone stamp tool, closed , reopened, etc., no avail.

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings. how do I change the e-mail address for my merchant account
