getPref() getting information from .txt containing a list

i want store information in list , sort in .txt file

i have done using setpref() works fine

however when try import saved data using getpref() not working

 

i have tried value(getpref(filename.txt ))

i first try leaving off .txt: 

    setpref("filename", string(yourlist))     yoursavedlist = value(getpref("filename"))

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings.
