Problem trying to create graphic style...

i'm trying create nave menu , in doing so, create single graphic style can achieve end goal. can want using seperate shape, defeats purpose of single graphic style. thought achieve using effect under

effect>pathfinder

but doesn't result expected. below can see both graphic style looks like, , want add (the gloss) within same graphic style. possible?

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings.
