Thread: [FOR US NOOBS] - 11.10 Broadcom wifi problem SOLVED

in both 11.10 , 11.04 it's been impossible me laptop (a dell xps broadcom 4311 wifi adapter)

think found solution. ubuntu users me (noobius maximus) please, no flaming super-experts.

involves deleting wifi drivers, reinstalling wifi drivers , refreshing wifi config info. giving ubuntu fresh start wifi...

need wired connection though.

i'm going walk through symptoms first them solution:

symptoms
- "device not managed" message in wifi
- blank wifi icon on top line
- existing wifi profiles in "wireless" tab of "edit connections" wifi icon
- upgraded previous version of ubuntu
- when booting in 11.10 machine stays on screen "ubuntu" , 5 dots long time , takes long time through network configuration (which should instant).

solution steps
- go synaptic package manager (box green arrow)
- search "broadcom" , in resulting list "mark complete removal"
- search "b43" , in resulting list "mark complete removal" everything
- search "ndis" , in resulting list "mark complete removal" everything
- reboot

- go synaptic package manager
- search "b43" , in resulting list "mark installation" 2 things: 1) "firmware-b43-installer" 2) "b43-cutter"
- reboot

- open terminal window
- type "sudo -i" (careful now, can on system including kill it)
- type "gedit"
- use "open" in text editor , click on "file system" icon on list on left
- navigate etc/network/ , open "interfaces" file in directory
- delete paragraph deals wireless adapter (specified "wlan0") paragraph should ssid , have large hexadecimal number
- save , close file

- click on wifi icon , "edit connections" , "wireless" tab
- delete profiles in here
- reboot
-(the above 3 steps seems have been magic bullet)

wifi started working again @ point. had re-enter wifi networks , on intarwebz again!

hope helps, shook confidence , love ubuntu when problem manifested in v11. hope developers right v12.

i guess that's 1 way.

keep copy of firmware on pen drive , drop b43 folder in /lib/firmware

job done

don't accept offer of additional drivers system. not open , not required. least not or device.
