hello, all, serious getting speed in ubuntu, , have question graphics drivers.

sorry if seem newbish, i've tried ubuntu before never got far before going windows.

have gtx460, , not know whether or not installed correctly.

suspect because cannot enable desktop effects. downloaded nvidia driver site, , couldn't run installer because nouveau x-server running.

okay if uninstall nouveau , use command:

sudo sh "drver" install nvidia driver?

every time check under additional drivers never shows up.

help, , go ubuntu!

had similar problems gtx 570...due not having correct driver

correct driver first need right packages , dependencies. can done easiest synaptic package manager. download , install via software center.

open synaptic package manager , type in search box "nvidia-common" , rightclick it, mark installation. same "nvidia-current" , "nvidia-settings" , click arrow @ top apply.

after have done that, go system settings , click on "additional drivers" , should display have driver installed, not used. thing left reboot use new driver

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings.
