i new linux interested in learning more

have friend has pc that's 5-7 years old. running windows xp , last time visited him, complained pc running slow again. did complete reinstall year ago , seemed it's how before. xp nearing end of it's life, have been contemplating moving him on linux have couple concerns.

firstly, need works out of box user friendly gui. he's type knows enough around , not more. can see him getting frustrated , not using linux altogether. don't want happen.

secondly, need things update seamlessly. example firefox, java, etc. reason again, simplicity sake , because 2 hours away , can't running house him out.

don't believe system requirements issue.

suggestions?

xubuntu. it's lightweight run fast, intuitive interface, easy customize, , comes great software.
gnome shell myself , that's use on production machine, i'm more , more impressed xfce , xubuntu, more experiment them.

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings. how do I change the e-mail address for my merchant account
