Thread: Samba to Windows 7 Home Premium

let me preface saying understand it's issue windows pc - yet it's sharing ubuntu machine, so, i'm posting here in hopes of finding answer.

apologize if has been answered somewhere else, i've spent lot of time tinkering , lot of time on google , i've given , decided come here , ask help!

i'm attempting set linux file/media server @ home. right now, have xubuntu installed on server, along samba.
so, 2 questions.
1) when share file, without requiring authentication (to on lan) server , shares visible , accessible wife's mac mini , work laptop (which running windows 7 home premium). however, pc (windows 7 home premium, well) requests username/password connect server computer - before seeing share(s) available on - , satisfied neither logins pc or ubuntu machine, when set identical ones. so, know sharing works on level @ loss figure out pc has set different laptop.

2) might @ point want restrict file access logins, , wondering how works if computers not on domain (since home premium cannot be) - can win 7 hp edition successfully?

in advance. when replying let me know if need further information, i'm not sure might consider relevant.

oh, , server running ubuntu 11.10, xfce interface, although believe if memory serves had same trouble on version of ubuntu, , gnome.

oh - @ point during process ended doing wipe/reinstall of windows other reasons - , clean install has same issues. fyi.

edit: i've tried adding registry file lmcompatibility or another, @ value 1, , @ value 2, respectively depending on different sources. neither worked or made difference @ all.

this may or not relevant it's thing can think of fits symptoms. has way windows machine browses network.

windows passes current user's windows login user name , password when browses. if happen have linux user same name , have given him samba password different windows password in infinite loop of credentials prompts. , happen @ host level before gets share.

if have guest shares remove samba password entirely, this:
code:
sudo smbpasswd -x morbius
or tell windows user use new samba password.

or make sure samba password matches windows user's login password exactly.
