Thread: Screen Brightness Control

i linux newbie (i windows admin , sqlserver dba - don't hurt me), , hoping here can me or guide me right place. installed ubuntu on dell laptop (with intel 945gm graphics chip), , after week of using upgraded 11.10. since upgrade, every time comes suspend mode screen brightness turned way down. found screen brightness control can fix when happens, annoying.

after finding control, discovered not work correctly--all way left dim, , way right seems full brightness, in between brightness level jumps around. 1 notch left of full brightness dim way left, , 1 notch further left 50% brightness.

searched on google , found few people reporting screen being dim after suspend, older versions of ubuntu or seemed different symptoms, , none had solutions. if happening on windows machine, first thing check if video drivers up-to-date, don't know how on ubuntu (i searched ubuntu website, , comprehensible instruction found "ask in forum".) safe download latest linux driver intel's website, or there ubuntu-specific file should use?

on laptop, brightness controlled acpi (and video driver doesn't affect it, although can brightness corrections). model laptop have?

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings.
