upgrade issues from PSE8.0 to 11.0. will not convert catalog

i have been running pse 8.0 time no issues , installed pse 11.  have been trying hours bring pse8 catalog 11 without success.  have run 'photoshoporganizer' administrator , gone manage catalog.  catalog shows 'my catalog 2' has 13 media files (mp3 files part of software)... not find pse 8 catalogue 16,000 photos !  have clicked on 'find more catalogs' , found pse 8 file have selected.  click on convert , presented dialogue box saying 'conversion failed ..... try repairing software created etc'  have run pse 8 repaired , found no errors. tried again... failed.  uninstalled pse 11.. reinstalled pse 11... repaired pse catalog again (no errors !) .. tried convert , failed !  getting frustrated should simple task.. have wasted money on pse 11.  can ???

try take backup of  catalog pse 8.0 , restore same catalog pse 11.0

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings.
