Odd stereo playback behavior (Solved)

(edit:  i've tracked down problem apple display speakers, of things.  way video stereo sound jumping , forth between left , right blitzing speaker 1 channel.  figured out listening on ear buds.  apologies community dumb question;  thought more interesting bad speaker.)

 

i have mac pro, running mountain lion.  client gave me dvd rip news footage on (legally acquired).  strange thing is, dvd sound not play correctly on computer, , computer only.  stereo tracks seem cut in , out.  i've had problem no other file, , every other computer in office plays fine.  after ripped mp4 on computer,  put in premiere pro cs6 , fcp7, wave forms there, no sound comes out, , levels meter track doesn't move.  cutting in , out seems coincide edits made original editor.  had hand off else convert.  after converted quicktime movie, computer still not play sound correctly.  however, other stereo videos i've tried play correctly.

 

does phenomenon ring bell anyone?  have plug in or corrupting 1 file?

i using ubuntu desktop on lucid , keyboard changes british keys american keys, #/£, ~/| , "/@ around. in system->preferences->keyboard menu have set keyboard uk. when log via putty uk keys come out right. there other place more configuration required? /vfclistsguy actually settings should enough.. can try setxkbmap -query see current layout settings.
